Silva Rehermann, born in Uruguay and specialised in general topology, played a key role in the development of mathematics education in Latin America. Following the Cuban Revolution, he was among the first foreign mathematicians to arrive in Havana, where he made a significant contribution to the creation and consolidation of the School of Mathematics at the University of Havana. He served as the school’s director from 1963 to 1968 and continued his pedagogical work in Cuba until his passing in the year 2000.
